New Hampshire Democrats Chose Politics Over People, and Working Families Are Paying the Price

Across the country, working families are feeling the pain of another government shutdown. Soldiers, seniors, veterans, and small business owners are now paying the price for political games in Washington. This shutdown was not inevitable. It was the direct result of House Democrats, including Chris Pappas, voting down a clean government funding bill that would have kept the lights on, paychecks flowing, and vital services running.
At midnight on October 1, the federal government shutdown. Democrats voted against the Republican-led funding extension, and in doing so, they punished millions of Americans who depend on basic government operations. This was a choice, not a mistake.
The results are devastating. Over 1.3 million active-duty soldiers are now serving without pay, forcing military families to wonder how they will make ends meet. Nearly 50,000 Coast Guard members are working unpaid while protecting our borders and coastlines. More than 150,000 federal law enforcement officers, including Border Patrol and ICE, are continuing their duties without pay. These are the men and women who risk their lives to defend ours, yet Washington Democrats have turned their backs on them.
The ripple effects are everywhere. Wildland firefighters will see their pay halted just as disaster season peaks. Food assistance for women, infants, and children is lapsing. Veterans’ care programs are disrupted. Seniors who rely on telehealth through Medicare are losing access to treatment options. Rental assistance and homeless veteran programs are drying up. Flood insurance is halted during peak hurricane season, leaving millions of families exposed. Over 13,000 air traffic controllers and thousands of TSA agents are working without pay, leading to travel delays and flight cancellations.
Even small businesses are feeling the squeeze. Federal loans that help Main Street grow are now frozen. Farmers waiting on disaster relief are told to wait even longer. Every corner of our economy is being impacted, and every delay adds up.
This is not governing. It is reckless politics. Democrats could have voted to keep the government open, but they chose to walk away and blame others. They refused to sign a Clean CR because they would rather protect their partisan priorities than protect the people who sent them to Washington.
Every Democrat who voted to shut down the government, including Chris Pappas, sent a clear message to their constituents. They are willing to freeze paychecks, halt veterans’ programs, and cut off aid to mothers and children rather than support a clean funding bill that keeps the government running.
The cost of this shutdown is not just financial. It is a moral failure. It tells every soldier, every senior, and every small business owner that their government no longer works for them. It erodes faith in the very system that is supposed to serve the people.
Republicans offered a clean funding extension that would have prevented this crisis. It would have ensured pay for our military and law enforcement, continued vital services, and kept the government open. Democrats voted no. They chose politics over people.
While Democrats are focused on political theater, House Republicans are focused on solutions. We are fighting to restore stability, protect taxpayers, and keep our government functioning for the people who depend on it.
This shutdown is more than a headline. It is a warning about what happens when leadership gives way to partisanship. The American people deserve better than a government that uses them as leverage in a political game.
It is time to put an end to the dysfunction, reopen the government, and get back to work for the people who make this country great.
